Solar Hot Water and Heat Pricing
BOYD SOLAR

Solar Thermal Systems

Double wall evacuated tube collector systems – Domestic Hot Water

There are many different systems and configurations available. Some samples are as follows. Larger systems can be priced on request.

If you are looking for our other prices follow these links.

Solar Electric systems take this link to those prices

For our regular rates take this link to those prices

These approximate prices are examples only and reflect the materials needed under Alberta's solar regulation, (Standata P-08-01-NPC). Regardless of who installs your system, make sure code is followed. Importantly Solar is separate in the last paragraph of this document and is not treated as a normal hot water system.

Double wall evacuated tube 30/55 System includes (Preheat configuration)

1 - Double wall vacuum tube (30 Tube) collectors

1 – 55 Gal single coil tank

1 – Pump Station

1 – Expansion Tank

1 - Controller

1 - 5Gal pail of concentrated heat transfer fluid

3– Air Vents

$ 7710.00 plus installation (see below)

Double wall evacuated tube 60/120 System includes (preheat configuration)

2 - Double wall vacuum tube (30 Tube) collectors

1 – 120 Gal single coil tank

1 – Pump Station

1 – Expansion Tank

1 - Controller

1 -  5Gal pail of concentrated heat transfer fluid

1 – Air Vent

$ 11,500.00 plus installation (see below)

Installation for the systems will vary with the house and amount of work in integrating into the present system. These preheat systems are the easiest to integrate as they are installed so that the incoming water is preheated in the supplied tank. Heat dissipation must also be provided for those times when very little water is used such as vacation times. Installation for the above systems will be very similar – about $ 4,500.00 to $7,000.00. The larger the system, the more cost effective the installation since a lot of the installation costs are related to the piping and mechanical room work. The amount of this work is the same for 1 or 2 collectors.

Double wall evacuated tube Heating Systems

  • Double wall evacuated 30 tube collectors @ $2,500.00 each depending on angle of Frame
  • Generally will be used with a boiler and 1 or 2 double coil tanks
  • Other System requirements are

Pump station Delta T controller Pipe from Collectors Insulation for pipe Diversion dump load Glycol

    Back up power system

  • This is a more cost effective use since, generally speaking, the infrastructure costs i.e. controller, pipe, insulation, diversion dump load are similar in single collectors up to about 8 collectors.
  • Figure that the cost will likely be about double the cost of the collectors or more depending on where they are mounted

These systems require very little maintenance. It is essentially the same as any normal boiler type systems and relates to checking the heat transfer fluid and replacing it as needed..

Complete Building heating is quite costly, but more easily and economically integrated on a new building. the cost of installation and depending on the size of TES, but it will most often triple the cost of the collectors by the time all is installed with a proper hydronic heating system, boiler and hot water tank. We take a complete holistic approach to solar heating that has been very successful.

A quick guide is take the Sq. feet area of the house divide by 100 and that is roughly how many collectors you will need,

EG: Average build 2600 square foot home, equals 26 collectors (actually, anywhere from 8 to 30 depending on the size and construction)

26 collectors at $2,500.00 each will cost about $65,000, times three will bring a complete system in at $180,000.

This example underlines the importance of the building efficiency with the high cost of renewable energy system in mind, and understandably this is why most people will Augment conventional heating with solar to a greater or lesser degree.

Note:

  • Systems must be installed by us or another certified installer and are not available in a do it yourself form.
  • Because of the difficulty people have had building their own systems, code and safety issues, Boyd does not sell thermal components over the counter.

It is also a very good idea to have a battery backup system to keep the system going in case of power failure and keep the system from stagnating and over heating.
